Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre (GHDT) maintains a vast repertoire of pieces ranging from short works to full-length productions. The GHDT repertoire focuses on numerous political, social, historical, religious and cultural themes, but also presents lighter pieces which are purely for entertainment. The repertoire is rich in contrasts of movement and dance styles and utilizes a wide range of music from classical to avant-garde. The following is a list of some of the works in the GHDT repertoire.

ABU AL AZ - Based of the Islamic faith, this exciting 25-minute dance features Middle Eastern music.

ACCIDENTAL BEDROOM DANCES - Three unique dances combine to make this fun-filled and poignant piece. Approximately 15 minutes.

AFTERNOON OF A FAUN - A modern recreation of the controversial ballet first performed by Nijinsky in The Ballet Russe, set to the music of Claude Debussy. 11 minutes

ALTERED STATES - The music and events of the late 60’s and early 70’s have provided the creativity for this piece that features the entire company in a series of dances.

AMAZING GRACE - A beloved song interpreted in three different versions and the dancers of GHDT in three very unique dances.

ANGELS - GHDT’s powerful, athletic dance set to Celtic music. 18 minutes.

AT LAST - A series of solos and duets set to standard songs. 17 minutes.

A THOUSAND DEATH SHROUDS ON LOVE - Only the title is deceiving to this toe-tapping audience favorite. An abstract dance set to Celtic music. 22 minutes.

BABA TAMBO - Created several years ago in response to Apartheid in South Africa, this dance still remains relevant and inspiring. 22 minutes of powerful African rhythms and melodies.

BENEDICTION - The companys tribute to the loss of life on September 11, 2001. A beautiful, haunting and incredibly moving piece which serves as GHDT’s prayer to the world. Incredible music by world artists sung in Hungarian, Mali, Swahili, Spanish, Urdu, German and Chinese demonstrates the ability of the arts to transcend the barriers that divide our world and speak to us all on a spiritual emotional level. 20 minutes.

BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH - A duet originally created for the Hennig sisters (both dancers of GHDT). A dance exploring the unique relationship between sisters, using bowls of water as a metaphor for the sharing of souls. 11 minutes.

THE BIRTH OF THE GODS - Out of chaos the Gods were created and they created children and the lineage of Greek mythology as we know it today. This spectacular tour-de-force of modern dance is critically acclaimed favorite piece as well as great crowd pleaser. 28 minutes of non-stop, high-powered dance.td>

BOLERO - The 16 minute dance set to Ravel’s Bolero combines modern movement with Flamenco dance styles to create one of GHDT’s most popular works.

BOOK OF DAYS I - Based on a medieval theme of the Black Plague and a contemporary them of prejudice. The dance runs 25 minutes.

BOOK OF DAYS II - A continuation of Book of Days I including contemporary music of Bulgaria and Latvia. 23 minutes.

BÚSQUEDA - Busqueda is inspired by “The Mothers of the Disappeared”, mothers whose children have been politically annihilated in Argentina. The dance is not literal depiction of events, but rather a depiction of families splintered with emotions of grief, loss, anger, remembrance and hope. 25 minutes.

CABARET - A series of cabaret style dances that showcases the individual talents of the GHDT dancers.

CARMINA BURANA - Set to Carl Orff’s dramatic piece of the same title, Carmina Burana depicts a battle of good and evil through a game of chess. The 50-minute dance features a cast of 32 dancers.

CONTAMINATION - One of GHDT’s signature works representing the fragility of life after a nuclear disaster. The story centers round a group of survivors trying to rebuild their lives.

CON TE PARTIRO - A solo work originally created for GHDT dancer Dawn Hennig.

CONTUSION - An energetic, athletic, abstract dance utilizing powerful Australian percussion music as a score. Approximately 20 minutes.

THE CORN MAIDENS - This charming dance based on a Mexican folk-tale relating the origin of corn set to an eclectic mix of music. Includes two children, six corn maidens, a magic bird and a Shaman. 20 minutes.

CROP CIRCLES - The unexplained phenomenon of “crop circles” has provided the inspiration for this piece. Large and intricate designs have appeared in crops of wheat, corn, barley and other crops. Approximately 20 minutes.

"cuchi cuchi" - A fun and entertaining dance inspired by the famous words of the 70’s variety artists, Charo. 20 minutes.

CUERVO - Cuban music and colorful Latin costumes are the inspiration for this energetic dance featuring the entire company. 13 minutes.

DEVDAS - Devdas is the story of love beyond all else…even life. This classic Indian tale, based upon the novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhye and the film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, tells the story of Devdas and Paro who share a special bond that is put to the test when Devdas is away to England to further his studies. Paro waits for him and light s a diya signifying her undying love for Devdas. When he finally returns Paro’s world lights up again. Their love is fully supported by Paro’s mother, Sumitra, who is full of life and joy. However, due to a meddling sister-in-law, the love story takes an unfortunate turn after Devdas’ mother, Kaushalya, insults sumitra and refuses to accept Paro as her daughter-in-law. The hurt Sumitra arranges Paro’s wedding to Saminder Bhuvam, a rich widower. Hurt by the turn of events, Devdas turns to his college friend Chinu Babu who opens Devdas’ eyes to the world of alcohol and courtesans. Chandramukhi, a beautiful courtesan, falls in love with the righteous Devdas. Sadly, even her love cannot save the doomed Devdas who quickly becomes and alcoholic. The pain of his lost love can only be numbed by alcohol and it is that alcohol which ultimately consumes Devdas’ life. This spectacular story ballet features a cast of 16 dancers, colorful Indian costumes, beautiful music and a classic Romeo and Juliet story. 60 minutes.

DESTINY - An abstract dance set to unique and beautiful Portuguese music. Featuring the female dancers of the company. 15 minutes.

DRACULA- A full-length three act modern ballet portraying the descent from the world of light to the depths of darkness in the human soul. Passionate, sensual and dramatic choreography by GHDT Artistic Director, Gregory Hancock , stunning costumes by Rudi Korbinski, Scenic design by world-renowned artist, Valery Kosorukov and dramatic lighting design by Ryan Koharchik. A score combining nine different composers creates backdrop for this unforgettable piece.

EL DUENDE - A Spanish flavored modern ballet, a tragic story of love and the music of Rodrigo combine to create a haunting and dramatic piece. 18 minutes.

EVERY BREATH IS A PRAYER - A beautiful dance inspired by Tibetan Buddhism in which dancers interpret Buddhist prayer flags blowing in the wind. Through the movement of these flags in the wind, prayers are released to drift throughout the world. 20 minutes.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - A series of vignettes inspired by Russian music that ranges from traditional folk music to popular Russian music. Each section of the dance represents a different type of love: humorous, flirtatious, passionate, painful, spiritual, innocent and simple. 25 minutes.

THE GARDEN -GHDT’s award-winning multi-media production dealings with AIDS. This 48-minute piece features original music created for the piece, live music, actors as well as the dancers of GHDT.

GARUA - a spirited, joyous dance to the folk music of the Andes Mountains. 20 minutes.

GREEK MYTHOLOGY 2003 - Ancient Greek mythology, contemporary Greek music and contemporary settings provide the backdrops for six stories that can be closely related to the work of dancers today. Featured in the piece are stories of Achilles, Eros and Psyche, Hermes, The Three Graces, Echo and Narcissus and Pandora. 24 minutes.

GOD'S ISLAND - A series of solos and ensemble work for the female dancers of the company. The piece travels on a spiritual journey of acceptance and understanding. 30 minutes.

THE GYPSY VAMPIRES OF DRAKOV - This reworking of the company’s highly successful and popular production of “Dracula” delves deeper into the history of the vampire and relationships surrounding Drakov and his coven of vampires.

THE HOLY DOORS - A mesmerizing dance consisting of a solo and a series of four dues. Inspired by the four holy basilicas in Rome and the Virgin Mary. 25 minutes.

HOORAY FOR BOLLYWOOD - “It’s not Hollywood, it’s Bollywood!” A spectacular Indian production number with special appearance by Scarlet O’Hara, Rocky Balboa, Indiana Jones and Dolly Parton.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME - GHDT’s masterpiece, full-length ballet based on the classic story of Victor Hugo. This spell-biding piece is a tour-de-force-of modern dance not to be missed. Featuring a dramatic story-line, colorful characters, magnificent music and a bare stage this is GHDT at its finest.

IMAGINE - Set to timeless songs from the 60’s, Imagine is a lighthearted piece that unexpectedly changes course, just as life. 12 minutes.

ISLAND OF THE GOD'S - An energetic, abstract dance that utilizes traditional and contemporary music of Bali, Myanmar, Japan and China.

JOAN OF ARC - A 35 minute modern ballet inspired by the life of Joan of Arc. Three dancers portray Joan of Arc as Joan, the maid, the soldier and the martyr. A haunting dance of faith and vision.

KHEPRI - A mystical dance inspired by creation in ancient Egypt. This powerful dance features four dancers from the company in a series of non-stop dances. 16 minutes.

KRISTALLNACHT - “The Night of Broken Glass”, a pivotal night during The Holocaust that changed our world forever. The 30-minute dance includes music of Schoenberg and Mahler.

LAGAAN - An exciting ensemble dance set to incredible music from India. 18 minutes.

THE LADY OF SHALOTT - A medieval fairy-tale based on the famous painting and poem. 12 minutes.

THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN - A contemporary, psychological ballet based on the famous murder case of Lizzie Borden. 30 minutes.

LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING - This whimsical and light-hearted dances takes a look at the changes falling in love create in our lives.

LOVE SONGS - Set to spoken word, the dancers of GHDT relate stories of love in an intimate and personal dance piece.

LUZ DE LUNA - Seven unique dance with seven unique stories including passionate and romantic duets, a trio of First Communion girls, and a gang of “low-riders”. Set to a variety of Mexican and Puerto Rican songs. 30 minutes.

MAMA MIA! - A lively and exciting dance featuring the entire company in solos and ensemble dances.

MONDAY MORNING - GHDT’s tribute to the crisis in Bosnia. The dance represents the lives and stories of several people living through the crisis. The 15-minute dance is set to timeless folk music of the 1960’s.

MY GYPSY SOUL - Music of Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, India, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Africa creating a backdrop for this work that traces the footsteps for the Gypsies from India to Spain.

MORNING PRAYER - A hypnotic ritual dance utilizing traditional music and costumes of Nepal. 11 minutes.

NAILED WITH FLOWERS - A series of five solos for the dancers of GHDT set to timeless love songs. 20 minutes.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA - Great opera classics, and an evening of romance, betrayal and intrigue at the opera.

1941 - AA riveting solo work about a mother’s grief during the Holocaust. This solo piece premiered in Riga, Latvia, 8 minutes.

1968 - A poignant duet inspired by the political situations in the former Czechoslavakia in 1968 which became known as the “Prague Spring”. Another one of the company’s signature pieces that features dancers as marionettes.

THE NUTCRACKER? - Full-length modern version of the holiday classic. GHDT’s Nutcracker follows the same story line as the original but with a different twist. The updated version portrays Klara as a homeless orphan girl who discovers the true meaning of the season through the gist of a homeless man.

ONCE UPON A TIME - A full-company piece that combines many beloved fairy tales with alternate endings. Characters include: Cinderella, Snow White, The Wolf, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, The Prince, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood. 32 Young dancers portray townspeople, dwarfs and fairies. A delightful, family piece.

OOH LA LAA - A comic piece featuring the company in a series of solos, duets and ensemble dances set to a variety of French music.

THE OPERATION - A comic dance about a group of surgeons and nurses who transform a ballet dancer into a modern dancer. The exhilarating trumpet concert of Hummel provides the perfect music. 22 minutes.

OUR TOWN - Adapted from Thornton Wilder’s classic piece of literature, Our Town is the story of the meaning of life and death. GHDT’s dance version is set in a Amish community with the music of Aaron Copland providing the score. 45 minutes.

OUT OF DARKNESS - A dance of spirituality and faith. One of GHDT’s most popular pieces. 20 minutes.

THE PEARL FISHERMAN - A comic underwater fantasy the combines modern dance, rhythmic gymnastics and music. 6 minutes.

PLEUVOIR A PARIS - A painterly and poignant piece set to classic French music featuring the entire company. 15 minutes.

PORQUE ESTOY MUY SOLA - Set to the colorful music of Silvstre Revueltas, this dance is about the life and art of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo. 12 minutes.

PYAAR KARIYE - Another piece inspired by the Bollywood film industry. 17 minutes.

THE RAPTURE - An ancient Hindu fairy-tale about a Princess who falls in love with a gardener. Set to Sergei Rachmnainoff’s Piano Concerto NO. 2, The Rapture is filled with passion, jealousy and eternal love. Runs 40 minutes.

THE REMAINING - Set to percussion music of Carlos Chavez, this 17 minute dance tells the story of a tribe of women warriors who destroy the men who enter their domain.

THE RITE OF SPRING - Another controversial Nijinsky ballet provides the theme for this ballet. GHDT’s version depicts a tribe of Inca Indians who must sacrifice a human to renew the spring. Set to Stravinsky’s powerful score.

THE RIVER'S EDGE - A classic piece of the GHDT repertoire. This dance of sheer joy is set to “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana. On the surface is a dance of happiness, but a deeper look provides insight into the minds of the mentally challenged.

SACRAMENTA SANCTA - Set to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, this dance depicts the seven Holy Sacraments of the Catholic Church.

SALOME - The biblical story of Salome and John the Baptist is portrayed through a dance of passion. Runs approximately 15 minutes.

THE SARI - This beautiful, mesmerizing and entrancing piece explores India’s old and new traditions and how they effect Indian women today.

SIMCHA - A celebration of Jewish music and history. Simcha includes Spanish-Judeo music, songs in Yiddish, music of the 1940’s and contemporary Israeli music. Simcha celebrates the Jewish spirit through the Exodus, the Disapora, Immigration and Israel. Created to selebrate the 50th Anniversary of Israel. Runs 35 minutes.

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE - This inspirational and moving duet is based on the story of the young peasant girl in Lourdes, France who has visions and visitations of The Virgin Mary. This 16-minute piece is set to music of Ralph Vaughn Williams.

STARRY NIGHT - Based on the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh, this dance allows the dancers of GHDT to portaty colors and painting of Vincent’s life. Set to Ravel’s colorfull Paino Conert in G. 23 minutes.

STIGMATA - The critically acclaimed piece about the crucifixion of Jesus and the women who were at his side. 38 minutes.

SUPERHERO: THE STORY OF A MAN CALLED JESUS - Another one of GHDT’s masterpieces. This critically acclaimed, full-length modern ballet follows the last week of the life of Jesus through the eyes of the women surrounding him and Judas Iscariot.

THAT’S AMORE - A comic piece featuring classic music of Italy. Italian movie stars, chefs, bakers, mob-wives, nuns, peasant girls and more.

THIS IS WHY WE ARE BORN WITH A CLEFT ON OUR UPPER LIPS - A spiritual dance inspired by angels of different religious traditions. 18 minutes.

TRAIL OF TEARS - Based on the forced evacuation of the Cherokee Indians from their homelands to a spot of land in Oklahoma. This dance is set to music of Native American composers is also about reverence for nature and the danger of losing of lands. 16 minutes.

THE TROJAN WOMEN - Euripides classic play of the horrors of the Trojan War remains as poignant today as the day it was written. The Phrygian women of Troy whose entire families, husbands and children were killed are taken captive to serve as slaves.

THE TWO FRIDAS- An excerpt from Gregory Hancock’s musical “La Casa Azul”. The two Fridas features dancers who represent two different sides of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo and her close relationship and struggle with death. 6 minutes.

THE VISIT - A series of four dances based on a theme of Wicca and nature. This beautiful dance runs approximately 15 minutes.

VOICES FROM THE SKY - Set to contemporary music of China and Tibet, this abstract dance for the entire company represents ancestral voices carried by the wind. 16 minutes.

THE WESTERN WALL - This lyrical modern ballet for the female dancers of GHDT was inspired by prayers in the Western Wall in Jerusalem. 12 minutes.

WHY LOOK AT THAT MOON - This 25 minute dance set to the wonderful music of Victoria Williams portrays many stories of interesting relationships.

WINTER from THE FOUR SEASONS - An abstract dance set to music of Vivaldi.
